Blog 10: Senior Project Update

(1) What are you currently doing in your independent component?

I have decided to use mentorship hours for the first independent component and currently have four hours completed.

(2) What is a recent piece of research (article, interview, or audio-visual) that have you reviewed you would say was significant in helping you understand where to go next in your senior project?  The piece of research should be something you reviewed in November.  Please explain what you learned and where are you going next because of this piece of research.

My second interview pointed me towards programming, and I have been looking into it since.

(3) Provide evidence from your independent component or the piece of research as something you recently did.  For example, a photo of something you working on for your independent component or your notes from the video you watched.

Blog 7: Independent Component 1 Approval

(1) For my independent component, I plan to use the Java programming language in order to create an application that connects an Android phone to a server that will allow the user to monitor the system resources, users, and files.

(2) My plan should meet the 30 hour work requirement because of the extensive time it takes to write, test, and release working applications on the Android phone as well as the computer system. For the 30 hours, I will find a mentor that knows the Android system development code as well as learn how to connect the Macbook I am using to test the application to my Android phone.

(3) The project I am working on for independent study applies to my senior topic because it will allow system analysts and administrators to monitor their systems from anywhere their phones can access the Internet.

Blog 4: Working EQ


(1) Positive Statement: So far I've gained some insight about the possible future of my career path. 

(2) EQ Content:  The interview helped me understand the topic better because of the attitude I noted from the guy I'm working with. He was very laid back but had a sense of urgency and was punctual about his timing.  From what I've experienced with my mentorship hours this is the overall attitude of most of the workers in the systems admin/analysts area. 

(3) What has worked for you so far in the senior project? So far the mentorship hours have worked well for me. Finding research was a bit tough initially but I think I've found some more reliable sources. Interviewees should be easy as well. 

(4) What hasn't worked so far?  First interview didn't go as planned because interviewees kept dropping out of my appointments.

(5) Finding Value:  Based on your experience so far,

  •  What possible question or questions come to mind regarding what you would like to study this year?
    • I'd like to study the architecture of the Linux operating systems as well as business management, so most of my questions are regarding the software programming in the operating systems along with the work life of systems analysts/administrators 
  •  What is your end goal this year with your senior project?
    • Gain knowledge about everything that computer systems administrators/analysts do and improving on it (development, error identification, etc.)
  • Who would you like to talk to you next? Why?  
    • Tom Limoncelli because he is the systems administrator of Google and I would like to see what his experiences are with such a massive company.

SF Blog A: Problem Statement


1. Decreasing or eliminating the amount of people acting unfairly or gaining unfair advantages in an online multi-user environment (such as video games, commerce, etc.) When I have completed this issue I will publish it to the community to let others know about how to stop this issue.

2. Reputation. Most systems admins/analysts aren't really recognized in the workforce and are overshadowed by people who have a more visual talent. When I complete this issue I will find a way to spread the information about the job.

Blog 3: Interview Preparation

1. Who do you plan to interview? Why?

I plan to interview Robert Kellohen, he is my father and he was the one who first introduced me to this field.

2. You have to ask five questions. What additional questions do you plan to ask? Ask open-ended questions.

Other questions I plan on asking are what to typically expect from customers in this job field and how to deal with customers when certain issues come up.

Blog 2: Topic Choice


What is your topic and why?

My senior topic is computer hardware and software analysis. This is because this is a field I have experience in, it’s something that I enjoy doing, and it will probably be a future career choice or hobby.

What do you attempt to accomplish this year with this topic?

  • ·      Effective I-Poly Citizen: I plan to empathize with the distress of others as the device they use for business in their everyday lives fails to work with their needs.  This relates to me improving as an I-Poly citizen because it strengthens my talent in assisting others and putting myself in their shoes.
  • ·      Effective Learner: I will attempt to gain the experience of my mentor. This will make me more effective as a learner because it will give me new perspectives to what I see and learn while in classes.
  • ·      Effective Communicator: I plan to meet with the clientele of my mentor.  This will help me become an effective communicator because I will experience firsthand what it’s like to talk with someone who requires technical support.
  • ·      Effective User of Technology: I plan to take the job seriously, this will make me a more effective user of technology because it will give me experience in the field and will allow me to work with devices that I may not have been able to work with on my own.

Realizing that this was something I enjoyed doing as well in my free time. This is important because it’s better to do something that you’re interested in doing than something that you aren’t.

This helped me choose my topic because of the in-depth experience that it gave me into the job field that I would be working in in the future, along with building communications between people who could be potential customers in the future.
